Thank you Francesca

Can't believe it is our last day! It has been such a busy year! Today we were able to harvest some radishes and we continued weeding and clearing. We made some stakes to support our peas and cleared the path. We also reorganised some of the garden items.  We moved the compost bins to the back of the garden and we also moved the water butts to catch run-off when it rains.

We are going to miss Francesca from Urban Roots.  She has been a great help this year and provided us with a lot of support and advice! Thank you Francesca.

Everything's coming up roses!

Look at our beautiful roses growing in the wild flower garden! Meanwhile, up in the vegetable garden, we found that our potatoes, peas, radishes, onions, lettuce and blueberries had all spouted immensely over the past hot, hot week! Unfortunately, so had the bindweed, mare's tail and other weed, therefore today's tasks included weeding, clearing and watering, watering, watering! We missed Francesca from Urban Roots today because she was unwell so we would like to say please get well for our last gardening session next week! :(

Sun, Sun, Sun

We did loads today!   We had stations of tasks and rotated between pot patrol, measuring for weed surpressant, watering the potatoes, onions, carrots and peas, planting basil, chives, radish, parsley and lettuce and clearing the bluebell grassed area.  We also used the school's own recycled compost to topsoil our carrots in bed one.  Everyone worked very hard and the garden is now looking very well and just about ready for summer.  Yay!

Water, water everywhere!

This week we managed to fill the water butt using three hoses joined together!  This means our onions and potatoes had a really good drink on this warm Monday afternoon.  We also transplanted a blueberry bush into ericaceous soil.  It's looking much healthier. We mulched, we weeded, we cut away more brambles!  Francesca has done a fantastic job clearing the back section of the garden.  It's looking great with weed suppressant and a top layer of straw.  Thank you Francesca!

Bluebells are Blooming!

What a scorcher of a day!     The bluebells are blooming beautifully and a few pea shoots are peeking through.   We cleared an area for fruit trees - phew, that was hard work!   Like the plants we are very thirsty.

Tattie planting!

We split into groups so that we could get all of the jobs that we had planned completed! One group were watering all of the beds and the pots in the Greenhouse while another group were on Pot Patrol with Mrs Parker. Our plants, fruit and vegetables really needed watered as it has been so sunny over the last week! Francesca from Urban Roots showed us how to plant potatoes and one group worked on that with her. We got lots of hard work done today!

Urban Roots Fun

A big welcome to Shannon our new member and also to our special visitor from Urban Roots called Francesca.

Francesca taught us about different types of tools that we will be using in the garden. We now know their names and what we should use them for. We also know how to use them safely.

We also explored the garden to see what kinds of plants we could find and we showed Francesca all the fruit, vegetables and herbs that we had planted. We watered these to help them grow.

We are so excited to learn more from Francesca next week!

Easter Bunny Surprises!

This week, we planted some herbs including basil and parsley. We also began clearing Rhubarb Range and Bluebell Corner. Some of us continued to clear the path to the garden and others were watering vegetables that we have planted over the last few weeks.

We had a special surprise from the Easter Bunny! He had hidden chocolate eggs in the daffodils. We all managed to find one and had a special treat. The teachers even got one too!

Welcome Mrs Porter

This week we welcome Mrs Porter to our gardening club. She joined in all the clearing and weeding to be done. We planted broad beans, leek and peppers and they are in our greenhouse to propogate. We have put lots of spring bulbs in pots around the school.
